The Stick Game is a traditional system of combat, martial art, which is also identified as a dance, by the body movements and connection with the pair and the group that composes it. In this video a group of men represents one of the ways to “dance” this game that until the 20th century was still frequent to be seen all over Portugal. Sometimes, entire villages got involved in brawls, other times the fights were individual, or one player against several. The charm for those who saw these feuds was to see a man manipulating sticks with spectacular movements that come very close to dance choreographies.

Diada castellera de Sant Fèlix a Vilafranca del Penedès. La Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls descarregant un 4 de 9 amb folre i l'agulla a la plaça de la Vila.
Dancers: Grupo dos Ferreiros, directed by Mestre Alfredo Ferreira; Musicians: Toni das Gaitas And his daughter
This video presents two different performances: the first is performed in the same place while the second follows the organization of a parade (at approximately 05m00s), but both are constituted by two rows of dancers and a master in the center. The first performance is composed of two dances designated as “Contradança” and “Dança”. The music emphasizes the passage both at a rhythmic level (slow / fast) and at a melodic level (from 03m30s onwards). In Contradança, the two rows perform lateral displacements and half turns on each other (part A) and cross each other – this figure is called a “top” (part B). The two rows also follow a face-to-face organization, accompanied by singing (part C) and carry out movements back and forth, as well as wheels with the dancer from the opposite row (part D). Each part is repeated several times and can be summarized as follows: intro AABB pause CDCDCD AABB. In Dança, the dancers in each row hold each other's swords and the master joins the two rows holding the swords of the first dancers of each row – designated as the “guides”. The movements follow the same organization as in Contradança: two rows perform lateral movements and half turns (part E) and the top makes the two rows cross (part F). Each part is repeated several times, the structure of the Dance being: EEE FF EEE pause EEE. The second performance is composed of the same songs: in the slower part, the musicians and the group's flag start the parade formation and in the faster part, Grupo dos Ferreiros performs part of the Dance, Integrating the parade formation in turn.

Flamenco is born from the Spanish Roma community and traditional work often includes a singer, guitar player and dancer. LifeStrings is a screendance film that investigates climate justice, violins and motherhood using a contemporary flamenco dance vocabulary. Reflecting on traditional Flamenco dance rhythms, techniques, gestures and modes of transmission, the work asks questions about what we copy and imitate and what we disrupt and let go of in terms of traditions. The film is using a choreographic lens to navigate cultural and generational trauma while also relying on the dancing body to reveal embodied histories and practices. Romani Violin playing by the Lautari musicians have a great tradition of violin playing, with virtuosos frequently embroidering their music with extreme amounts of ornamentation. Within Flamenco, the violin is often used to replace the singer and becomes the voice within an accompaniment. LifeStrings examines this notion of voice and disrupting traditions while drawing on Roman Krznaric’s thinking of the “the good ancestor”. Reflecting on The Vaia, a violent storm that tore through the historic Val di Fiemme forest (Italy) in late 2018 and left a trail of devastation, LifeStrings is dedicated to intergenerational justice and long-term thinking. The Vaia storm in 2018, a great atmospheric depression with strong winds, turned Stradivari's forest into a landscape of destruction. Vaia had a dramatic impact in the whole area of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It caused almost $3.5 billion worth of damage and knocked down entire forests, destroying 8.5 million cubic meters of wood.
LifeStrings asks….What kind of ancestor do you want to be?
