Knowth Mace-Head, Ireland (Photo)
This stone mace-head was discovered in 1982 during the excavation of Knowth passage tomb led by Professor George Eogan, at the World Heritage Site of Brú na Bóinne, County Meath, Ireland. Carved from a single piece of flint during the Neolithic period, the ovoid shaped mace-head is decorated in relief by spirals, arcs and whorls. The top and base are decorated with thin lozenge patterns. One side of the head resembles a human head with the hole (17mm diameter) in the mace-head corresponding to the mouth. The artefact is 79mm long 54mm wide and weighs just over 324g.
